Hey, Congratulations on your admission to study in Italy!

Usually, three things are needed to gain entrance into Italy:

1. Legalization
2. Pre-enrolment
3. Visa application

These three processes are explained further in relevance to the country of residence.

NB: Although it’s pretty uniform across all Italian embassies in different universities, some things may differ. Below is a case study for Nigeria.

LEGALIZATION

Before you can legalize at the Italian embassy, you need to do the following things:

1. Take your original WAEC result, BSc certificate (if going for masters), official university transcript, primary school certificate (not compulsory), and NPC birth certificate if you were born after 1992. OR NPC attestation of birth and affidavit declaration of age if you were born before 1992.

2. Take a clear photocopy of these documents listed above to an official Italian translator for them to translate to Italian. Check the embassy website of your country for a list of their accredited translators.

3. Proceed to take the original of these documents to the Ministry of Education and Foreign Affairs in Abuja for authentication. Make sure you obtain receipts at these ministries as it’s needed by the Italian Embassy. Also, make sure you authenticate the photocopies of these documents as well. Although, the ministries will normally do this, just bear in mind just in case. Note: you can do this by yourself or send someone living in Abuja to do it for you. You can also use transport companies to send your documents.

4. After steps 1, 2, and 3, you’re ready for Legalization. Book an appointment with the Italian Embassy to legalize these documents. Take along your originals, and photocopies that were authenticated at the ministries in Abuja with the proof of receipts and the translated version of the documents.

Also, look for this form, print it, and hand-fill it as it will be submitted alongside your documents.

As of 2018, legalization per document costs about N9,500.

PRE-ENROLMENT

Alongside the same documents from Legalization, print this form and submit it:

1. Two coloured photocopies of your passport data page.
2. Acceptance/Admission letter from the school.
3. Two coloured passport photographs with a white background.
4. As of 2018, pre-enrolment costs about N21,500.

Note that you can do both Legalization and Pre-enrolment same day at the Embassy provided all the listed items above are with you when going for your appointment. Also, confirm all documents are still the same from the Italian embassy website.

You will get a Declaration of Value document (after your legalization).

VISA APPLICATION

When all the above has been done, Check this form for everything needed for your visa application. As of 2018, I applied through the VFS office.
