The 50 best cities to live and visit in the world, featuring three African nations, according to the latest global ranking in 2025.

Waka Waka Doctor reports that Time Out has unveiled its annual ranking of the world’s best cities for 2025, highlighting three African cities that have captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. 

The list is based on insights from over 18,500 city-dwellers who evaluated their urban environments across various criteria, including food, nightlife, culture, affordability, and overall happiness.

1. Cape Town, South Africa – The World’s Best City

Cape Town has reclaimed its title as the best city in the world for 2025. This vibrant coastal metropolis received outstanding reviews from residents, with 97% expressing happiness living there and 95% praising its culinary scene.

Known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Cape Town offers a unique blend of experiences—from lounging on remarkable Blue Flag beaches to tasting world-class wines and exploring the iconic Table Mountain.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis emphasised that this recognition is particularly meaningful as it reflects the sentiments of the city’s residents, showcasing their passion and resilience in building a community that thrives on connection and creativity.

2. Marrakech, Morocco – A Cultural Gem

Marrakech is celebrated as the 32nd best city globally, known for its warm hospitality and vibrant arts scene. Following a challenging year marked by an earthquake, the city has emerged with renewed energy, featuring a flourishing festival culture and new community hubs. 

Locals appreciate the pedestrian-friendly streets filled with cafés and shops, as well as historical sites like the Ben Youssef Madrasa that showcase exquisite Moroccan architecture. 

The city’s ability to adapt and grow while maintaining its cultural roots has made it a favourite among both residents and tourists.

3. Lagos, Nigeria – A City of Innovation

Ranked 41st, Lagos is ranked for its dynamic atmosphere and innovative spirit. The city is evolving with multi-purpose venues that blend dining with entertainment, such as La Taverna Restaurant which hosts various events beyond just serving food.

Lagosians enjoy a lively social scene where making friends is easy—72% of locals reported that meeting new people is straightforward. Additionally, improvements in public transport are enhancing connectivity across this bustling metropolis, making it easier for residents to navigate their vibrant city.
