Exploring Safety Worldwide: 5 Safest Countries in the World

I’ve read countless stories online about vile and vulgar experiences that happen to tourists when they visit a new country. Although this isn’t the case for everyone, you must know that some countries are safer than others, especially if you’re solo traveling.

In this post, I’ve put together a list of the 5 safest countries in the world based on their crime rate, political stability, and healthcare. This list serves as a guide to help you know what to look out for when you want to migrate or travel for vacation.

Top Safest Countries in the World

Our list of the top safest countries in the world is provided by the Global Peace Index (GPI) which is a non-profit organization that is committed to changing the world’s attention to peace as an indicator of human welfare and advancement.

The countries on this list have been assessed based on qualitative and quantifiable safety metrics like the country’s homicide rates, military spending, political instability, and level of internal conflict.

According to the GPI (2024), the top 5 safest countries in the world right now are Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Austria and Singapore.

Iceland

Iceland is perched on top of the GPI ratings in 2024 and has been number one on their list since 2008. This is because of the country’s low crime rate, high political stability, and great environment. Both citizens and tourists testify to the country’s safety which makes it a great destination to live or vacation. Iceland has one of the lowest crime rates in the world as there are few cases of theft or violent crimes. The country is known for its close-knit communities, which has helped foster a ‘be your brother’s keeper’ mentality, thereby increasing security. This coupled with world-class healthcare, a robust democratic system, and outstanding disease preparedness has helped Iceland to remain on the top.

Ireland

Besides the country’s natural beauty, Ireland is known for being a popular tourist destination due to her friendliness, warmth, and interest in guests. Ireland ranks second in GPIs 2024 list of the safest countries in the world and its people’s friendliness is not the only reason.

The country has a high GDP per capita of $94,392 which is the third highest in the world thereby indicating the excellent life quality the country provides. Ireland is also known for its stable economy and low crime rate, earning a score of 2.1/5. So, if you’re looking for a great place to be, consider Ireland.

Austria

The next on the list of safest countries in the world is Austria with a GPI score of 1.313/5 which is quite impressive. Austria is known for its low crime rate which is one of the reasons why it always makes it to the top of the list and also makes a great place for tourists to explore without restraints.

Austria also has a stable political climate, as there is respect for the rule of law, human rights, and democracy. It is a well-developed country that has increased its level of safety and security. They also have accessible, affordable, and excellent healthcare so it is no surprise it is number 3 on the list.

New Zealand

Coming in at number 4 on the list of safest countries in the world is New Zealand, a country known for serenity and security. New Zealand has stunning natural beauty and is known for being a reliable and secure travel destination for travelers. The country has a record of low crime rates and high public safety levels.

Also, New Zealand’s effective law enforcement, stable political system, and resilient environmental policies all contribute to its number 4 ranking. The country was also among the few countries that managed to successfully control the COVID-19 outbreak. With other benefits like its long history of peaceful government and respect for human rights, it is truly a safe place to be.

Singapore

The last on the list of the safest countries in the world is Singapore which comes in at number 5. In 2022, the GPI ratings placed Singapore as number one on the safest and most peaceful country list in Asia. This is majorly because of the country’s low crime rate (which is most likely due to punishments like the death penalty) most especially in gun-related crimes. In Singapore, one could even get fined for chewing gum or smoking outside of designated areas.

Singapore is also one of the cleanest countries in all of Asia – you will find well-maintained infrastructure, top-notch facilities, and effective public transportation systems. The country’s well-lit streets, police presence, and CCTV monitoring have also been efficient in maintaining a secure environment. Lastly, Singapore’s healthcare system is one of the best in the world as both tourists and residents have access to high-quality emergency services and medical treatments.

Conclusion

A country’s safety does not only come about from low crime rates but other factors like quality healthcare and political stability. The countries mentioned above are the top safest countries in the world, according to GPI 2024. However, regardless of where you want to live or vacation, remember always to take safety measures and stay updated with health and safety news.
