Canada Study Permit: 4 SHOCKING Changes to Proof of Funds

Canada study permit gets proof-of-funds change to CAD 23,448 from Sept 1, 2026. Discover 4 vital living expense rules for international students

Moving to North America to study just got a little more expensive! If you are planning your migration journey, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has officially rolled out its annual cost-of-living adjustment.

Effective September 1, 2026, the mandatory minimum living expense threshold for a single Canada study permit applicant outside Quebec increases from CAD 22,895 to CAD 23,448.

Wakawaka Doctor reports that while this CAD 553 increase reflects rising inflation, it strictly covers living expenses. You must still prove full coverage for your first-year tuition and return transportation separately.

Here is the breakdown of what every prospective applicant needs to know to secure a Canada study permit:

1. Scaled Proof-of-Funds Requirements by Family Size

If you are planning to travel with family members, the required proof of living expenses scales up significantly. Under the new rules for a Canada study permit, your household must demonstrate the following baseline totals:

  • Single Applicant: CAD 23,448
  • 2 Family Members: CAD 29,192
  • 3 Family Members: CAD 35,888
  • 4 Family Members: CAD 43,572
  • Each Additional Dependent Beyond Seven: Extra CAD 6,318 per year

2. Strict Evidence Standards for Financial Proof

Simply having the cash balance sitting in a new account is not enough to secure your Canada study permit. Visa officers demand verified proof showing where the money came from and that it is fully accessible.

Acceptable documentation includes bank statements covering at least six months, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a Canadian bank, proof of a student loan, or official scholarship letters.

3. Multi-Year Academic Funding Plans Required

If your study program lasts longer than one year, meeting the first-year threshold alone will not guarantee your Canada study permit. You must clearly demonstrate a sustainable financial plan for the remainder of your degree, such as ongoing parental employment income or multi-year scholarship coverage.

4. Grandfathered Applications Submitted Before September 1

If you submitted your Canada study permit application before September 1, 2026, your file will still be assessed under the previous CAD 22,895 cost-of-living baseline. However, all new submissions must reflect the updated CAD 23,448 threshold to avoid automatic refusal.

Navigating these financial adjustments requires early preparation. Ensure your bank statements are clean, verify your sponsor documents, and submit your Canada study permit file with total accuracy!
