Nigeria ranked 148th out of 163 in New Global Peace Index, Misses Out on Africa’s Top 10 Most Peaceful Countries

Nigeria has been ranked 148th out of 163 countries in the latest Global Peace Index, falling outside Africa’s top 10 most peaceful nations and sparking fresh debate.

The latest GPI ranks Nigeria 148th out of 163 countries globally, missing the top 10 peaceful countries in Africa and reigniting intense debate over the nation’s state of peace, Wakawaka Doctor can report.

The GPI, produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), assesses 163 countries based on 23 indicators covering societal safety, ongoing conflict, and militarisation.

In Africa, Mauritius tops the list for the 18th consecutive year, ranked 26th globally, followed by Botswana (43rd) and Namibia (50th), with Iceland leading the global list.

Nigeria misses most peaceful countries list

Nigeria’s position at 148th reflects ongoing challenges with violence and instability, which have led to thousands of deaths and displacement in recent times.

Mauritius’ long-standing lead as Africa’s most peaceful country highlights its strong societal safety and low conflict levels.

Botswana and Namibia also maintain relatively stable environments despite regional uncertainties.

Nigeria’s ranking starkly contrasts with those of these nations and indicates persistent security issues, including jihadist infiltration and regional tensions, that have worsened its peace score.

The rankings have provoked reactions on social media, with many users questioning the methodology and inclusions, while others express frustration over perceived security situation.

The Global Index paints a comprehensive but concerning picture: Africa has pockets of peace, but Africa’s most populous country, one of the continent’s giants, is grappling with serious internal security challenges that keep it distant from more peaceful African nations.

This ranking serves as a crucial indicator for policymakers, civil society, and international partners aiming to address Nigeria’s security challenges to improve its prospects for peace and stability within the continent.
