Intra-African migration: Expert exposes harsh realities in Nigeria, Ghana, & South Africa
Waka Waka Doctor reveals harsh truths about intra-African migration, exposing economic pressures, unemployment, and social challenges in Ghana, South Africa, and Nigeria for 2025.
A new YouTube video on Waka Waka Doctor’s channel, posted earlier this month, has ignited conversations about intra-African migration, shedding light on the challenges of relocating to Ghana, South Africa, and Nigeria.

Contrasting idealised portrayals with stark realities, it details economic pressures, social issues, and other factors driving intra-African migration, urging potential migrants to consider the “ugly truths” before moving.
Economic Pressures Driving Intra-African Migration
Economic instability is a key driver of intra-African migration across the highlighted countries.
In Ghana, over 9,000 people emigrated due to a 21.2% inflation rate and 20% youth unemployment.
South Africa recorded 13,000 departures, fueled by a 32.9% unemployment rate, crime, and xenophobia.

Nigeria faces significant migration issues due to insecurity, poor governance, and inflation exceeding 25%.
Living costs further exacerbate these challenges: a one-bedroom apartment in Accra averages $300/month with high food prices, Johannesburg costs $400/month with affordable transit, and Lagos ranges from $200-$1,000/month amid 40%+ inflation and soaring fuel costs.
Social Challenges Shaping Intra-African Migration
Pressing social issues also shape intra-migration. In Ghana, 38.8% youth unemployment has driven some to cyber fraud, known as “Sakawa,” as a survival mechanism.

South Africa contends with xenophobia and threats to the LGBTQ+ community, alongside its 32.9% unemployment rate.
Nigeria struggles with rampant insecurity, including banditry and kidnappings, compounded by a 25% inflation rate.
These realities highlight the unique challenges of migration within Africa and emphasise the need for careful consideration before relocating to Ghana, South Africa, or Nigeria.
