The UK Home Office has officially confirmed that most immigration and nationality fees will rise on April 8, 2026.

While the government frames these as routine adjustments to move toward a “user-funded” system, the cumulative impact on a family’s relocation budget is substantial.

The New Cost of the ‘British Dream’
Starting this April, most visa categories will see a 6% to 7% price increase. While that might sound like a standard inflationary adjustment, it applies to an already high baseline.
For example, a Skilled Worker visa for up to three years (applied for from overseas) will increase from £769 to £819.
If you are already in the UK and need an extension, that fee jumps from £885 to £943. Those applying for the Health and Care visa will see a more modest rise, with the entry fee moving from £304 to £324.
The biggest “sticker shock” comes at the end of the journey. The cost of Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), the crucial milestone for permanent residency, is climbing from £3,029 to £3,226 per person.
For a family of four, that represents nearly an £800 increase in government fees alone. Similarly, British Citizenship naturalisation will now cost £1,709, up from £1,605.
The UK: Why Businesses Are Bracing for Impact
It isn’t just individuals feeling the squeeze; UK businesses are facing a double-edged sword of a tight labour market and rising recruitment costs.
The cost for a medium or large business to obtain a Sponsor Licence is jumping to £1,682, while small businesses and charities will see their fee rise to £611.
Industry experts suggest this could lead to more selective hiring. Companies may prioritise “ready-made” talent already in the country to avoid the initial sponsorship hit.
Furthermore, the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), required for visitors from non-visa countries, is seeing a 25% spike, rising from £16 to £20.
The Africa-UK Connection: A Budgetary Shift
For applicants from Nigeria and across Africa, who represent a massive portion of the UK’s healthcare and tech workforce, the April 8 deadline is a critical financial milestone.
In a climate where many local currencies face volatility against the Pound, these Sterling-denominated hikes represent a growing barrier to entry.
One rare piece of good news in the new schedule is a significant reduction in the child citizenship registration fee, from £1,214 to £1,000.
