‘Who Made This List?’ — Social media explodes over latest most peaceful countries in the world ranking
A new global ranking of the most peaceful countries has sparked debate online, as Nigerians and global netizens question who made the list and how it was compiled.
The recently released list of the most peaceful countries from the Global Peace Index (GPI) has sparked widespread debate on social media, as many Nigerians and global users challenge who compiled the list and how the rankings were determined.
The GPI, produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), evaluated 163 independent states and territories, covering 99.7% of the world’s population, based on 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators measuring societal safety, conflict levels, and militarisation.
Top spots were dominated by countries like Iceland, Ireland, Austria, New Zealand, and Singapore. But only three African nations made the top 50: Mauritius (26th), Botswana (43rd), and Namibia (50th).

Wakawaka Doctor checks confirmed that West African giants and Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria, was ranked at a lowly 148th in the world.
The 2025 report highlights a worrying global decline in peacefulness, pointing to rising conflict deaths, geopolitical tensions, and economic fragility contributing to “The Great Fragmentation,” signalling a new era of global instability.
Most peaceful countries: Reactions
Social media responses revealed disbelief and frustration. One user angrily wrote, “Who the fuck made this list? It’s bullshit!!!”

Another questioned Germany’s inclusion with, “Germany, what idiot created this list?” highlighting scepticism, another tweeted, “Other than Malaysia and Singapore, all Western democracies,” while some mocked omissions, asking, “Why not Pakistan?” and “Qatar? Didn’t Iran bomb them, followed by Israel?”
Canadian peace was also questioned with a sharp comment: “You obviously haven’t done your homework if you think Canada is peaceful; it used to be way back, not anymore. Malls getting their jewellery stores stolen in broad daylight, and they don’t care.”
Amid growing unrest, netizens demand transparency and clarity around the assessment criteria of this much-debated peace ranking
